CW lesson from Kurt Vonnegut

In Sharon Warner’s intro to the profession class this week we had a discussion about punctuation and grammar. Tanaya and I both admitted to being em-dash junkies.  I had mentioned how I’d recently read an article on em-dashes vs. semi-colons and had been trying to use them more when possible, rather than the oft-times distracting em-dash.

Then I came upon the following Kurt Vonnegut quote on semicolons:

“Here is a lesson in creative writing.

First rule: Do not use semicolons. They are transvestite hermaphrodites representing absolutely nothing. All they do is show you’ve been to college.”

  1. I too love the em dash and likened it to a giant pointer in your text, a neon sign to say LOOK HERE!
